how to support myself when getting a leg up onto my horse. any suggestions?
i'm REALLY bad at getting leg up's onto horses. and it doesn't help that i just got a new horse and he's almost 18 hands. whenever i get leg up's i have a hard time supporting my weight and pushing myself up onto the horse. does anyone have any suggestions on how to support myself better? sometimes using a mounting block isn't an option. especially at shows.
my trainers wont allow me to use a mounting block sometimes lol. they like, make me get on by getting a leg up even though they know i'm bad at it.
Face the front of your horse, with your helper to your front and left. Grab the base of the mane firmly with both hands. Keep your left hip joint stable with your leg extended to your flexed knee. Your helper should have his/her fingers interlocked and cupping your leg as close to the knee joint as possible. If they use your shin, your flexed knee will be likely to buckle during the thrust. Count to three, then spring your weight up using your right leg to catapult your weight upward. Gripping the mane, use both arms to pull yourself up at the same time.
It helps if the person giving you the leg up knows something about body mechanics, and is good at positioning his/her body to maximize the upward thrust offered by using his/her whole body to elevate your weight into the saddle.
For a very tall horse and short rider, I leg them up with the foot in my hands. this allows them to use their own leg strength to straighten the left knee and gain more elevation. For a heavier rider, I brace the foot against my knee and let them push up. It helps to have a paper towel or rag handy for this, for obvious reasons.
This is also how you leg up onto a bareback horse.
