How do I put fleece over the wire on a rat cage?
I've just finished setting up my rat cage, (rat highrise from martin's cages) and I was wondering this... How do I fasten fleece to the cage floors and ramps? Also, how many changes of fleece should I have per week? Should I put aspen shavings in the bottom, or just more fleece? TELL ME ABOUT FLEECE!!!!
thanks
You can use binder clips, or put grommets in the corners and attach it with lanyard hooks. You can also just cut small holes in the corners and use lanyard hooks or zip ties; they make zip ties that can be released but if they chew on them you'll go though a lot of them. Some people use safety pins but I highly recommend against using them since they can get opened and poke the rats. For the ramps you can leave them without fabric; the bar spacing is small enough to be safe and they won't spend much time on them so I wouldn't worry too much about bumblefoot on powder-coated. Occasionally a rat will get it's foot stuck but that is rare and if it is galvanized metal it is more likely to be rough enough to cut their feet which can lead to bumblefoot. If you really want fabric, you could connect it with clamps/hooks or sew Velcro on the back and fold the fabric around the ramps.

I would just put fleece on the bottom too since aspen will get dragged up to the other levels and will stick to the fleece and is a pain to clean off. To keep it on the bottom you can weigh it down, use Velcro that is half sew and half stick and stick it to the bottom of the cage and sew it to the fabric, or cut a piece big enough to hang outside of the cage and place the wire part of the cage on top of it. I'm not sure why the other person thinks it's a waste to use fleece on the bottom since it can be reused and most rats will use the bathroom on every level unless litter trained. If you have a hand-held vacuum it will make daily spot cleaning far easier too. I have been using fabric on all levels for years and have been much happier with it than with any loose bedding.
Usually fleece will have to be changed twice a week so I recommend at least two sets but the more you have, the less often you will have to do laundry.
Be sure that when you wash it you use white vinegar or unscented detergent (or both). Scented detergents are bad for their respiratory systems. And wash the fleece a few times before using it the first time or all the urine will just bead up on the top of the fleece. Don't use fabric softener with it (vinegar can be used in the rinse cycle though).
If you only have a couple of rats and they are still very young the "Rat Highrise" will work for now but it is way too small for adult rats at only 11" in depth. Their cage should be at least 16" in depth. The only rat cages from Martin's that are big enough for permanent homes for rats are the R-680 (3 rats), 685 (3), 695 (5), and 699 (9). Also, if you got the galvanized metal, you will probably want to upgrade to the powder-coated next time since galvanized metal absorbs urine and will begin to smell really bad no matter how much you clean it.

If you haven't seen it, here is a forum thread with a lot of pictures of people's decorated Martin's Cages: http://www.goosemoose.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,118/forum,rat/topic,4043541.0
